Then 2020 arrived and brought with it the greatest societal paradigm shift since World War 2 when COVID hit the planet and…
The surveillance market has changed over the past few years, even if we exclude the impact the Coronavirus is having on all markets and economies today. But as the market changes, what is happening to what was (and still is) the foundation for surveillance projects, the video management platform? In this year’s handbook, we have…
Artificial intelligence (AI), deep learning (DL) and machine learning (ML) are popular buzzwords in the security industry (and everywhere else too) that have us expecting real-life science fiction from our hardware and software. But how amazing is the real impact of these technologies on the surveillance market? One of the primary environments where AI is…
When most people hear that Cathexis is a video surveillance company, they think that recording and playing back video is the extent of our capability and usefulness. Video is our major component, but providing holistic security and operational management solutions for our customers is our top priority. CathexisVision specialises in integrated infrastructure. The integration of multiple systems is intrinsic and essential to our goal of creating an effective and efficient operational environment. The ability of CathexisVision to integrate with a plethora of systems enhances the feature-rich CathexisVision video surveillance management software.
CathexisVision, the flagship Video Management Software Suite from Cathexis, has boasted rapid international expansion and been deployed in more than 45 countries since its inception. It meets all security and infrastructure management requirements across a wide variety of market and industry sectors. CathexisVision helps users make important decisions based on intelligent information processing and helps automate necessary actions in a control room environment. This provides improved effectiveness and efficiency, and greater return on surveillance investment. Cathexis has several prominent installations around the world. These can be found across a wide range of vertical markets, including: airports, city surveillance, education facilities, financial institutions, government facilities, healthcare facilities, hospitality, logistics, manufacturing, mining, oil and gas as well as property and retail.
CathexisVision is a video surveillance management application that provides sophisticated surveillance features to satisfy all security and infrastructure management requirements for mines across the globe. Cathexis offers users the ability to make key-decisions, based on intelligent information processing and take automated actions in the control room or command centre environment. Over the years Cathexis has deployed this solution across several vertical markets. Mining sites are often based far from metropolitan areas with insufficient infrastructure. This makes adequately securing a mine challenging for security. Solutions must account for the threat of breaches, health and safety on-site, and potential strike action. All while providing mining clients with a tangible return on their security and surveillance investment.
Management platforms have found a home in many residential estates and are used for a variety of security functions. Unfortunately, due to costs, old technology or bad product decisions, some estates have multiple management platforms for different security functions, and some older technologies are not able to integrate into current, open-standards platforms. In a world where there are almost innumerable vendors offering different management platforms, with integration and expansion promises differing in all of them, as well as different costs, what should estates do to ensure they invest in a management platform that not only meets their needs today, but can do so well into the future, potentially also integrating non-security functions into the interface to assist with operational management as well as security?
Savannah Hills Estate is located in Midrand, close to Blue Valley Golf Estate. Since February 2018, the estate manager, Dawie van Rensburg has been planning a security upgrade, involving perimeter cameras. The project finally went out to tender, which was awarded to Rhyco Risk Projects. The project started in March 2019 and was completed in May 2019. The estate has two river crossings which can cause nuisance alarms due to insects. Rhyco made use of the Cathexis Vision’s VMS platform, ensuring proper analytics and making use of the Cathexis dynamic background function, ensuring that nuisance alarms are kept to the minimum.
The CathexisVision IP video management software (VMS), with its extensive range of features, provides efficient and effective surveillance solutions to help clients get the most out of their surveillance investment and reap rewards for their companies. Based on an open platform, CathexisVision enables the seamless integration of IP cameras, recording servers and viewing infrastructure. The software is also capable of integration with third-party devices such as access control, alarm and fire panels, weighbridges, fence monitoring systems, and logistics scanning systems.
In the past there were two types of management platforms for video and other physical security systems, those made by the hardware vendors that offered limited capabilities and scalability, and which focused on the vendor’s products; and those that allowed multiple brands from multiple vendors to be integrated into a single solution. While the smaller, limited solutions are still available and widely used in small installations, with a little poetic license we can say that the top-tier platforms today are also loosely divided into two camps.
The one camp we can call an open platform that allows partners and developers to integrate just about any third-party system or solution into the basic platform, expanding its use far and wide. The other we shall call a unified platform that is controlled by one company that ensures all the systems and tools are integrated into the platform and perform optimally. Often these platforms still allow third parties to develop add-ons, but limit access to ‘the crown jewels’.
The temptations inherent to the banking sector, and financial institutions more generally, pit them in an eternal and increasingly high-tech battle to secure themselves against threats from within and without. They also have a responsibility to protect their customers and their data from unauthorised access, and since bank branches are essentially businesses they are seeking ways to improve the customer experience in similar ways to the retail sector.
Addressing all these concerns requires a highly integrated approach that uses the cutting-edge of security technologies across the board. We asked IDEMIA, Cathexis Africa and CA Southern Africa how their companies’ particular areas of expertise are being leveraged in the financial sector.
While surveillance has become a key component in security and operations management, a truly integrated security system requires that all aspects of the security system work seamlessly together, while being managed by the heart of the system, which is the control room. Working in a 24/7 security control room environment demands a lot of physical and mental commitment from operators. Thankfully several security product providers are designing and manufacturing products that reduce the risk of human error while enhancing the control room operators’ working environment. Real-time information followed by prompt decision-making and immediate action can make all the difference, which is why sophisticated video management software is central to the control room environment and its operators. The true power of a surveillance system, and what it can offer in terms of security, operations and infrastructure management becomes even more apparent when combined with sophisticated video management software,” says Gus Brecher, managing director of Cathexis Africa and business development director of Cathexis Technologies.
Cathexis Technologies successfully concluded its national CathexisVision Roadshow. Anyone can throw a few cameras on a few poles or screw them into a wall and say they have installed a surveillance system, but will that system actually deliver value? Will the needs of the end user be met in terms of secur-ity or will they simply be able to say they have a surveillance system and perhaps get a little discount from their insurance company?
The start of a new year always brings predictions of what we can expect to see happening in the coming year, and this year is no different. To find out what the physical security industry is expecting in 2018, Hi-Tech Security Solutions asked a few of the leading players what they expect and how they see the year panning out in South and southern Africa.
IP video surveillance systems are one of the most popular and effective security systems on the market today, gaining traction in various markets across the globe and particularly in educational institutions such as schools, campuses and universities. VMS solutions need to be proactive and results-oriented, providing a safe and secure environment, but also an infrastructure management tool. IP surveillance can assist in managing protest action, managing discipline challenges and even vehicle traffic flow when it comes to parking areas and the flow of students between classes.
It’s no secret that integration is the name of the game in security technology today. One of the primary areas we are seeing more integration than ever before is in the area of access control and surveillance.
Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) or Licence Plate Recognition (LPR) can support the access control function by allowing preregistered vehicles automatic entrance to a facility. Not only does it allow for simpler and faster access, but the location of a vehicle can be tracked wherever there are suitable cameras onsite, and one can do additional identity checks of the person in the vehicle to ensure that the individual is supposed to be in that vehicle.
Cathexis Africa has announced the appointment of Dene Alkema as national sales manager (South Africa) with immediate effect.
When it comes to safeguarding the mining industry, there’s no easy way out. There are a host of unique problems that drive security and surveillance requirements on mining sites. One issue with mining is that these sites are often very remote and far removed from major metropolitan areas, meaning significantly less infrastructure to work with, which can make our task more challenging.
Extremely large sites, multiple facilities, high volumes of pedestrian and vehicular traffic and very valuable assets are common characteristics of mining operations. Securing these behemoths is often a logistical nightmare as threats from common thieves to illegal miners are added to the inherent safety and security risks synonymous with mine complexes. Hi-Tech Security Solutions discusses solutions with industry specialists.
Security is all about mitigating risk and the main risk mitigation tool in estates is technology-based. Today’s technical solutions not only provide better security, but can also, if planned correctly, save money.
World-class security systems that offer peace-of-mind may be one of the biggest contributing factors for an increasing number of local and international buyers in some of South Africa’s luxury lifestyle estates. For those that can afford it, the allure of comfortable and convenient living, combined with the assurance that comes with a well-established, carefully managed and holistic security system is rapidly driving investment.
As the resolutions of digital surveillance cameras have increased and new technologies such as thermal imaging have been introduced, the ability to detect details and recognize objects has improved dramatically. To assist in automating recognition tasks and reduce the chances of human error, analytics technologies are continually advancing to keep pace by not only alerting to potential threats but also reducing the occurrence of false alarms
Still considered a critical contributor to the local economy, the South African mining sector boasts a total annual income of R550 billion and is one of the country’s biggest employers. With South Africa’s economy built on gold and diamond mining, the sector is an important foreign exchange earner, with gold accounting for more than one-third of exports. Gold mining in South Africa also accounts for over 10% of the world’s gold production.
The global retail sector is estimated to have achieved revenues of US$ 22.6 trillion in 2015 and should continue to rise to US$ 28 trillion by 2019, according to Research and Markets. Representing 31% of the world’s GDP, the retail sector employs billions of people throughout the globe. The effective management and safeguarding of this industry is therefore essential.
There is no shortage of video analytics solutions on the market today, from very expensive, cutting-edge technology that almost perform miracles, to the cheap and nasty that are bought so that people can say they have analytics installed. We are also witnessing a divide between analytical applications that are run on a central server (or servers) versus newer apps that run on the camera (on the edge).
Financial institutions face a wider range of risks than ever before with cybercrime, internal fraud and robberies. The only way to minimise these risks is to ensure that the business is protected by a comprehensive security system that safeguards customers, employees and assets.
The CathexisVision video management solution has successfully been installed in various property applications around the globe, including residential estates and office parks.
Hospitals and healthcare facilities generally facilitate a remarkably high volume of patients, visitors and employees. This environment requires high levels of security, exceptional access control facilities, sophisticated surveillance and a fully integrated IP video management solution to manage all security and infrastructure requirements.
Cathexis used its sponsorship of iLegal 2016 to highlight the enhancements it made to its locally developed CathexisVision video management software. The company’s stand had numerous videos on display demonstrating the capabilities of the VMS, whether it was collecting number plates and the speed of cars on a highway or tracking people entering restricted areas.
Commercial environments are no longer looking for individual security solutions. Today they want a package that offers all the aspects of security they need. Part of the reason for this move is cost based – it’s supposedly cheaper and more convenient to get it all from one supplier. Another reason is the need for integrated solutions that talk to each other for easier management and improved security.
The nature of commercial security is changing, with a growing number of companies looking for integrated security solutions to meet their unique needs. “The age of individual security solutions operating in silos may be over,” says Gus Brecher, managing director of Cathexis Africa and group marketing director of Cathexis Technologies. “Now clients are looking towards systems and solutions that will assist them in the seamless integration of multiple solutions from multiple suppliers.”

With the plethora of technology available on the market today, users must feel like they are sifting through a haystack, and perimeter security systems are no exception.
From small incidents of theft to sophisticated illegal mining syndicates and even the threat of violence during labour unrest. The local mining sector requires a strategic, well implemented and seamlessly integrated risk management plan to overcome some of these and other major threats that could impact on operations.
When it comes to the entertainment, gaming and hospitality industry, the customer’s overall experience is considered one of the highest priorities. However, these sectors still rely on a highly competent security strategy to ensure patron and facility safety.
A population of legacy analogue systems meant that superior security footage was limited for a major mining house. The organisation decided to adopt an centralised managment system that would allow for an integrated solution including advanced perimeter protection using video analytics.
Video management software ( VMS ) is turning CCTV surveillance technology into a powerful business management tool. In fact, the number of applications may soon only be limited to the breadth of the user’s imagination.
Cathexis Technologies not only meets the current market demands, but has, in fact, pioneered solutions that turn traditional CCTV surveillance systems into a comprehensive operational tool, which can be used to positively impact all areas of operation within an organisation.

While a security system is often sidelined as a grudge purchase in most sectors, there can be no debate about its critical importance in the banking sector.
Intelligent security systems are now more important than ever before as banks try to guard against both internal and external fraud in an ever worsening economic climate. That’s to say nothing of the ever present threat of a potential armed robbery. Taking all this into account, banking is one industry where effective security is a non-negotiable must.
