September saw Hi-Tech Security Solutions and the Consumer Goods Crime Risk Initiative hosting Retail Risk 2015 at the Radisson Blu Gautrain Hotel in Sandton. The conference focused on securing retail locations, specifically shopping centres where crime is at an all-time high.
From small incidents of theft to sophisticated illegal mining syndicates and even the threat of violence during labour unrest. The local mining sector requires a strategic, well implemented and seamlessly integrated risk management plan to overcome some of these and other major threats that could impact on operations.
When it comes to the entertainment, gaming and hospitality industry, superior customer experience is considered one of the highest priorities. However, these sectors still rely on a highly competent security strategy to ensure patron and facility safety.
While not the only security solution necessary in this sector, CCTV surveillance is a crucial security component in this type of industry. CCTV cameras will monitor entry and exit points, points of sales at shops, restaurants and hotels, ATMs, gaming tables at the casinos, retail stores, hotels, and in some cases – large crowds of people at stadia.
A population of legacy analogue systems meant that superior security footage was limited for a major mining house. The organisation decided to adopt an IP-based system that would allow for advanced perimeter protection using video analytics. A further stipulation was that the upgraded system needed to be able to integrate with other third-party systems, including the weighing scales and the access control system. A final addition to the system would be the inclusion of a command centre environment to enable the organisation to adopt a black screen management approach and monitor multiple sites from one centralised managment location.
The future of retail security lies in smart integration capabilities. This refers to the capacity that the system has to provide a reliable security structure, as well as a comprehensive infrastructure tool to improve the operational efficiencies.
Gus Brecher of Cathexis, who was also a speaker at the seminar, says that events like this are an excellent forum for suppliers, installers and end users in the residential estate security sector. Not only was the seminar and exhibition extremely well supported by the KwaZulu-Natal market, but it indicated the synergy and symbiosis that exists between each member in the supply chain.
